I was considering which storylines in the show's history have been the most talked about. 'How did Lucy die' is pretty well talked about at the moment, and everyone's got theories it seems. 'Who Killed Archie' was the most recent big reveal but i felt was quite short running, and although gathered some momentum before the live reveal, i'm not sure it was a massive talking point as when we found out Bradley was leaving we assumed it was him. 'Who shot Phil' was massive, 'Sharongate' was massive, 'Den and Angie's Boxing day divorce papers' was massive....they are the big three for me and certainly commanded massive viewing figures. What other stories have got everyone talking? Edited by soetmo, 1 May 2014, 13:11.

I'd put the Stacey/Max affair up there too - it was a very high profile, successful storyline. Also, Danielle's death was a big watercooler moment. And of course the baby swap got people talking but perhaps for the wrong reasons. |

Another one I'd say was Kat and Zoe in October 2001, given how dominant the Slaters were in the early 2000's. "You aint my muvva!" has to be one of the most iconic lines in the history of the show. |

It's not really a storyline but what about Den's return? I didn't use the Internet as much back then and I'm not really sure how people online reacted. |

I'm not sure if anything has beaten this one, what about Den handing Angie the divorce papers from Christmas 86'? I believe there was only two or three channels at the time but it was still watched by 30 million viewers! |

I was here on Walford Web at the time, and it was big. In fact I remember the day his return broke in the newspapers. The thread was really long. |

I remember when first started watching EE it was Dirty Den exit than a year later Wicksy,Cindy and Ian love triangle but the biggest ones in teen and adulthood has to be Sharongate and Who shot Phil. |

SharonGate was just massive. We all held our breaths and were glued the night it all came out in the Vic. Mad to think SharonGate was 20 years ago. In 2001, you ain't mah muvver was spectacular. I remember being away and watching the whole week on omnibus. Riveting. Jessie Wallace and Michelle Ryan really were superb. Max and Stacey's affair in 2007, was brilliant. A classic EastEnders Christmas. |

Sharongate is the first one that springs to mind. And if I remember correctly the soap mags (in the days before the Internet became more widespread) made quite a fuss about stories like Cindy hiring a hitman to have Ian killed, the who shot Phil saga, Saskia's murder, etc. But one other that stands out for me is Mark's hiv story, which ran all the way through the nineties, first with the Fowlers' reaction and his wedding to Gill, and later with Ruth and Mark exploring ways to have a baby, and with Peggy's bigoted reaction when she found out about the hiv. I don't know whether it got people talking much back then, but in hindsight I find it one of the most significant long-running storylines. |

Not so much a storyline; although I guess one could argue it was the ending of a storyline which spanned 13 years. One of the final scenes with Mark and Pauline, around 2003 time, where he was about to leave Walford on his bike and there was a scene with Mark and Pauline at the Fowlers table and it was really emotional and so wonderfully acted by Todd Carty and the late Wendy Richard. I'll always remember Pauline saying "But you are my life" or something to that effect and you could tell the tears in Wendy's eyes were real. |

Todd Cartney was great in that scene in the Vic when he confronted Peggy, I wish show leaned towards this kind of gritty edge than the shock stunt wannabe edge of today's eastenders.

I would say it did get people talking because it was a storyline not done before in soap. It was big. The Valentine's murder of Saskia was a big talking point and also the millennium wedding at the turn of the century saw a massive screen in London so revellers could watch and see if Mel would go through with the wedding. The Halloween house fire killing Tom and Trevor was also pretty huge. |

A recent one although not popular at the time was Kat's shagger. Lots of people were speculating who it was (and usually having a swipe at Kat at the same time) but it really had a lot of people talking. |

Your approval is neither desired nor required. Julia Smith "We decided to go for a realistic, fairly outspoken type of drama which could encompass stories about homosexuality, rape, unemployment, racial prejudice, etc., in a believable context. Above all, we wanted realism". | |

True, a lot of people were talking about this storyline but all for the wrong reasons as most were fed up with this protracted story that seemed to go on forever. |

Another talking point that was for the wrong reasons was second death of Den. |

I remember Little Mo clouting Trevor with the iron being quite a big deal at the time, as was her trial and verdict. |

Another biggie was when Dougie took Michelle, Grant and Sharon hostage in the Vic and shot Michelle. It was to mark the show moving thrice weekly. |

Who impregnated Michelle Fowler was the first big un I think. Eddie Royle's murder was pretty massive too. Any gay kiss in the 80s or 90s Anything that involved Tiffany. especially her death. |
