Salute of the week; keeping Rory's reviews alive

I suggest we have a thread for SALUTE OF THE WEEK to keep the memory of Showbiz Geek's reviews alive.

It was always a positive note for Rory John to end on each week so this could be a feel good thread where we choose to salute someone's contribution to the show that week. (And, remember it can be, but doesn't have to be, an actor.)

Any ideas on if or how this could best work?

I think this is a great idea! Perhaps we could have a weekly poll containing that week's cast?

Not just the cast, but writer and director too perhaps, as they contribute also.

Thanks Ian.

I think nominations followed by a poll could work really well.
If this isn't too tricky then I'd be happy to take anything on that helps it run smoothly.

There's a lot of actors (plus writers/directors) though. You're never going to get a clear winner by voting and it'll be a popularity contest when saluting people should be a way to also allow lesser names to be recognised for their work. I recon it's best to let everyone just decide their own salutes of week but only allow posts in the weekend in order to keep it weekly.

For week 45 I salute her majesty June Brown, the lovely Lin Blakley and Rebecca Sproggs who's not put a foot wrong yet but never gets any recognition because her character Tosh is so unlikeable. We salute you.
Warning: Posts made by The Local Butcher may contain sarcasm, frustrated expressions of fatigue in the face of Eastenders' neverending insanity, desperate and ill-conceived attempts to be funny, controversial opinions and nuts. Not necessarily in that order.

Absolutely, and if people can spot contributions that may otherwise go unnoticed I think that's all the better.

I love the idea of the thread, but I don't think a weekly poll would work, there'd be way too many options. And it's nice to see people post the reason for their salute.

My salute of the week goes to Lin Blakley for slotting into the show effortlessly and creating such a likeable and intriguing character despite being saddled with Roger SloHam. Close runner up is John Altman for the delivery of some of his brilliant lines this week.

Very good points. Especially about keeping it over the weekend which helps keep it fresh.

I think, though, it does need something that makes it a Walford Web salute, rather than dispersed nominations. We could do a summary post at the close of the weekend highlighting the various nominations. That way it isn't a popularity contest but still gives a summary of what the forum was thinking collectively for that week. I'd be happy to give up my nominations to write this up.

Good idea. Easier to let everyone decide for themselves who they'd like to salute and then just summarise and name a winner at the end rather than have a poll. The added benefit being that people actually have to comment and aren't just lazily selecting someone from a really long list.

I think instead of doing a poll or nominations it would be a good idea to just have this thread as a place where people can post their salutes ad explanations themselves, whoever theirs may be.

Great idea though CivvyStreet, the positives can be buried real deep under the criticisms sometimes.
"I loved it in the Olden Days because you talked more. There’s more action now. You know, we would do scenes in the Rovers of me, Bet and Doris Speed with a cup of coffee each before we opened the pub, talking about absolute rubbish. But it was something, and it was what people do." - Betty Driver

In general this week DTC, the writing team and John Altman deserve praise for achieving the clear impossible by making Nick Cotton a viable and engaging character again after the shambles of his last return, Nick and Yvonne are probably the strongest part of the new Cotton unit I could easily picture them in a two hander episode talking about their pasts and relationship and doing it justice something I can't see Charlie and Ronnie been able of doing.

And also the development of Pam and Les Coker has being one of the many joys of 2014 both just fit into EastEnders so well and the reveal which is coming concerning Pam's secret will be greet to see unfold.

John Altman deserves praise this week. In some episodes, he bloody carried them. Yes, I know on some of his returns, most notably his last, he's become increasingly more cartoonish, but his last return was totally without direction or arc. He's here for a purpose now, he's playing Nick as a total tour de farce, having a great time doing it, and it's a success.

I've watched Nick since the beginning, and at no time does he ever seem, simultaneously, so menacing, so engaging and so honest. Nick's existence will be the twist in the Lucy tale, I'm betting.

Wonderful idea and I second a personal, emotional approach because that is what soap is all about.
I salute John Altman for resurrecting a legendary character that connects generations of viewers and another salute goes to the writer who came up with the lines/dialogue for Tosh's Mum. It is very rare to see homophobia addressed in such a realistic way, simply by promoting a straight agenda.

Thanks to everyone for the warm response to this idea.

The consensus seems to be to keep it simple and everyone chip in with the cast and crew members they'd like to give a salute of the week to.

It doesn't really need to be a closed thread -- people should chip in with salutes as they think of them. But let's try and stick with salutes for only the current week. Also cut off for the week is Sunday afternoon, at about 3pm. (It feels right to have it around when the omnibus used to be broadcast.) I'll do my best to round-up and list the salutes on a Sunday evening. I won't be selecting or having the last word, it'll be all inclusive and just make it easy to see who we were saluting that week in one post.

So... for Week 44

John Altman
Lin Blakley
June Brown
Rebecca Sproggs
...and Jo Martin as Judy Macintosh...

WE SALUTE YOU!

Who would we like to salute for week 45?

And yes, I think we should include Children in Need extras with the episodes!

In that case, in no particular order...

Michelle Collins, Gillian Taylforth, Hetti Bywater and the fab Pam St Clements.

For this week gone I salute Jessie Wallace for her amazing ability to turn Kat from a vulnerable, scared and confused victim of a fire to a strong, feisty and fierce woman within a couple of episodes. Her stand off with Stacey at The Vic encapsulated her character perfectly.

I second that. My salute of the week also goes to Jesse Wallace for infusing her character with a moving mix of vulnerability and courage. It felt truly empowering to see Kat facing herself in the mirror and confronting the world out there, looking and sounding more combative than ever 🌹
