True EastEnders Icons

The sad passing of Anne Kirkbride, a true soap icon and legend has led me to wonder who from EastEnders would be considered as an icon? The characters that are so widely known and loved that even if you aren't a viewer - you'd still know about.

Past and present.....

definitely Dot,

Grant, Den & Angie, Sharon?

Definitely Phil, Pat, Peggy, Frank, Pauline on top of those mentioned.

From more recent times, probably Kat/Alfie and maybe Max too.

Just a friendly reminded, let's try not to turn this into a list thread folks :)

Personally I would say Ian, Phil, Dot and Sharon and the most iconic because they have clocked up the most episodes and have maximum exposure across all eras. At least 2 of them have always been in the show at the same time also. Also, sad as it sounds, I brought up Dirty Den in college the other day and none of my girls knew who the hell I was talking about... it seems we really have left a lot of characters behind us now for newer viewers.

Ian, Sharon, Nick, Dot, Phil and Kat currently in the show. Plus Pat, Peggy, Frank, Pauline, Angie, Den, Grant and Bianca.

I'm quite stingy with who I give iconic status to. There's an abundance of characters like Ricky, Michelle, Stacey, Tiffany, Steve Owen, Arthur, Alfie, Sonia, Carol, Janine who are all right up there but something just stops me from giving than iconic status. But by the same token, if anyone were to refer to those characters as iconic I think they would be justified with most of them.

Can't believe I missed Ian. Definitely - everyone knows Ian.

Bianca is very legendary for her catchphrase I guess, and Frank, for his catchphrases too.

I'm not sure about Kat....

I think Kat is iconic for the 'You ain't my muvva' scene - everyone knows that scene and therefore Kat.

Although, funnily enough, I'd never think to describe Zoe as iconic despite the fact she was also in that scene.

I think perhaps the revelation that came after that helped Kat to become an icon, as that was when viewers understood why she was the way she was and started to like her.

Martin isn't an icon, as I see it. James Alexandrou was never great, and we only really saw 5 real years of the character full time.

Dirty Den and Ange, Pauline Fowler, Ian Beale, Dot Cotton, Frank and Pat Butcher, Phil and Grant, Mark Fowler 2.0, Peggy Mitchell 2.0, Rickaaay and Bianca, Kat Slater.

I think those are the characters even someone who doesn't watch the show would know.

As you can tell, that was before I liked Sharon again.

The remaining original characters - Sharon, Ian, and Nick. Dot, most certainly. Peggy and the Bruvs. Pauline, Arthur, Lou and Kathy; most definitely Pat. Frank Butcher, Ricky and Bianca (as a pair), Janine (Charlie Brooks's version).

Cindy Beale.

In most recent times, since the Millennium, I'd say Kat and Alfie could have been, had they not returned and been ruined by Kirkwood.

The newer character with the most potential to become iconic would, most definitely, be Stacey.

There was a picture on Facebook of Den and Angie and another of the Slater sisters on Instagram the other day and a lot of the newer, younger viewers were commenting because they had no idea who they were. Also, it's quite worrying when you see newer viewers saying Dexter, Tyler and Joey should never have left!

Back on topic, I'd say Sharon, Ian, Dot, Phil of the present cast are considered icons. Past characters I would say Peggy, Grant, Angie, Den, Kat, Pat and Janine. Possibly Bianca because I think most people would know who she is or recognise her.

I also think characters such as Max, Ronnie, Roxy, Masood (and Zainab if she returned), Shirley, Mick and Linda could reach this level if they stay on the show for years to come.

RE your last sentence I would add in Stacey Slater and Ronnie Mitchell.

My favorite's were always Pauline and Arthur, their scenes together were just so realistic and it really felt like a normal family. The Drama wasnt always high octane stuff but it was real, and down to earth.

These clips show just that

I just love that, Its a small little "filler" scene but it's just as good. Thats why I really loved the Stacey and Shabnam "normal" scenes the other week, they had a down to earth normal quality to them.
