I mean during this side of the millennium. I think:

1) Stacey Slater
2) Ronnie Mitchell
3) Max Branning
4) Shirley Carter
5) Roxy Mitchell

I'd say Kat is more popular than any of them to be honest. After that it would be Stacey and Max.

If it was a contest of popularity right now, I think Stacey and Max would walk it. A lot of people are bored of Kat.

Yeah, Kat is shit now, but I'd say as a whole she is the most successful this side of the millenium. I would actually throw Alfie up there with Max and Stacey too, possibly Ronnie.

Max Branning is certainly the most successful male character besides Phil, Ian and Alfie in recent times. Mick has potential to be one but a bit more work has to be done with him. Kat and Stacey are the most successful female characters and still are.

I agree, but I would argue that Stacey is more popular than Kat now and is the better character overall due to how the character has constantly reinvented herself and is more adaptable.

This side of the Millennium, Kat and Alfie before Kirkwood destroyed them. Other than that, without a doubt, Stacey Slater and Max Branning. Prior to the Millennium, the Mitchell brothers, Sharon, Ricky and Bianca, Peggy, and - of course - Frank and Pat.

And Charlie Brooks's Janine.

I agree Stacey is a good solid character but for me she's still tainted by the Archie story: the shining example of this was during the fire plot when she took the moral high ground over Alfie and was written as the 'hero' of the piece despite the fact that her past actions were worse than Alfie's own. Though Kat has been regressed she can be believably re-focused with the right material.

With the Archie stuff, that was a bad choice, they should have really stuck with Peggy. Sometimes the bad writing or characterisation can play a part!

The problem with Kat is the predictable stuff with Alfie and they should establish more connections for her on the square, she knows people and has the history/links, but only tends to speak to the same people?

LandLady.
As far as characters created from 2000 onwards, Kat Slater is the most iconic of them all.

Kat, Stacey and Max in my opinion.

I reckon there's longevity of 20+ years (with breaks) in the above 3 characters.

Well Kat would be the most successful due to her storylines and characterisation in 2000-2005. She is head and shoulders above the rest in that department.

Then I would add Alfie, Stacey, Ronnie and Max.

The rest of the popular characters who were created since the millennium I don't think will be remembered as classic characters.

I think Denise and Shirley have been a success also, both have been in the show for 7+ years.

To be honest, I'm more put off by Sharon's past mistakes than Stacey's.

I still can't shake off the thought that Sharon Watts, a character who was always depicted as a strong woman, was pining and getting into meaningless fights with Ronnie over Jack Branning for the most part of a year.

Kat, Alfie, Stacey, Bradley, Max, Ronnie, Roxy.

Mick & Linda certainly have the ingredients for it in the future.

I agree with the names that have been mentioned above, but I would like to add a strong, well-acted and generally well-liked male character to the mix who often gets overlooked despite having lived on the Square for nearly 14 years now: Patrick Trueman.

He may not often steal the limelight or get the meatiest stories, but to me he's always been a thoroughly enjoyable character, an integral part of the Walford community, and I would really miss him if he were to leave the Square. That, to me, makes Patrick a successful character.

I think Patrick is one of the few characters who is universally loved too - most other long-standing characters divide opinion but I've not heard a bad word said against him.

Though I'm sure, now I've said that, we'll get an 'I hate Patrick' fan club by the end of the day!
