Funny how people used to hate Stacey because they literally forced her into every single storyline. Now they're doing the exact same thing and it's suddenly a good thing? Just because she's suddenly likeable doesn't make it any better.
Surely it does make it better? If you find a character to be more likable then surely an increased screen presence (and by no means dominance - such as we've seen with the Carters) can only be a food thing? Having said that, she hasn't actually appeared in all that much. Many of us have made note of the fact that she's only actually appeared in one or two scenes an episode sometimes - which I think is what makes it so effective.

The other absolutely key difference being that she doesn't actually have her own storyline at the moment. Her fulfillment of the supporting role works because she's not batting for the spotlight at the moment.

And something of a contradictory point but I'll make it anyway: Whilst she's always had her haters, we're all more than aware that Stacey was and always has been a hugely popular character. Some may have hated her dominance back in the day but that was always far outweighed by her extreme popularity. So I don't think she's 'suddenly' likable. She's always had likability, she's just maturer now.

Quoting limited to 2 levels deep
The writers don't pretend Stacey's perfect at all. The reason she works as a confidante is because she has had a colourful past herself and she can draw on her past experiences to help other people.

If Stacey was perfect, it would be boring.
The exact reason that her current role as Albert Square Agony Aunt works so well is that it comes from a woman who has had terrible life experiences and has learnt from all of her mistakes. It's because of her past that she's become to earthly and wise.

Admittedly, I hated Stacey for the longest time because of how she broke up Janine and Ryan's marriage. Now that she has admitted her mistakes (though cold-blooded murdering someone is WAAAAY more than a mistake), I find her refreshing. I want her and Martin to get together in May 2015, get married in January 2016, find out that she's pregnant in March 2016, and give birth to Brian Arthur Fowler in December 2016.

I must admit the whole St Stacey thing, though a definite upgrade on the Stacey who left back in 2010, has grated on me a tiny bit. Not because I don't like the character as she is now, but because it's sort of come out of nowhere. While it's not implausible to think that Stacey's life experience would have left her wiser, kinder, more mature, the fundamental facet of her character has always been that she's selfish- and that's just not something that someone looses, and funnily enough, I do miss that.

Her character interactions have been natural, I won't deny that.

I don't think I will ever be able to "like" Stacey due to her unwarranted animosity towards Janine, but I'll grudgingly admit she is one of the key characters in recent months.

It does show how warped some peoples values are when "Good Deeds" include committing murder and sleeping with your father-in-law.

Well no one has even vaguely implied your examples are good deeds. I think you're confused.

The idea is that those mistakes Stacey has made has led to her becoming a kinder character who is willing to help others. I'm ready to catch moments of selfish Stacey at times as well, but this is a very natural progression. Don't think anyone has "warped values" here.
"I loved it in the Olden Days because you talked more. There’s more action now. You know, we would do scenes in the Rovers of me, Bet and Doris Speed with a cup of coffee each before we opened the pub, talking about absolute rubbish. But it was something, and it was what people do." - Betty Driver

It's almost like she is becoming a young matriarch. She's a connector character who ties the big storylines together. It seems especially important to have this type of character around right now the way things are. Pat and Peggy are gone, Sharon and Dot are caught up in their own problems and Kat hasn't been herself for a long time.

No doubt that she will become a matriarch. She's not there yet, but she will be eventually.
