Always thought this. I need a scene where Bianca talks to Courtney about Tiffany before she marries Liam. |

We all have those scenes and scenarios that we play over and over in our heads. Other than Kathy turning up at Ian's door, Bianca reminiscing about Tiffany to Courtney has always been one. Edited by The Other Slater Cousin, 28 Jun 2015, 19:44.

| "I loved it in the Olden Days because you talked more. There’s more action now. You know, we would do scenes in the Rovers of me, Bet and Doris Speed with a cup of coffee each before we opened the pub, talking about absolute rubbish. But it was something, and it was what people do." - Betty Driver | |

Butcher men have always had a thing for Mitchell women so Liam and Courtney definitely seems likely to happen at some point. The prospect of a recast does worry me. Not because James is so amazing or that next guy won't be any good. I just that don't know how he's going to translate into an adult character and whether I'll even like that version of the character. I don't want him to end up as some laddish guy, some slob with no career and rubbish at romance like Ricky and Martin. Give him some entrepreneurial spirit. This is David and Frank's grandson, Janine's nephew. Give me shades of those characters. A charmer, who inevitably screws things up as he's trying to make his fortune so his kids won't have to eat chicken nuggets growing up the way he's had to. |

One of the best (if not the best) Liam scenes for me was when he was working with Ian in the cafe last year, when Liam returns, which I can see soon, I want to see him working in the Cafe along side Ian whilst also putting himself through College doing something other than aiming to become a Mechanic like many other young males before him seem to end up doing. |

I know exactly what legacy means.... It doesn't change the fact that Courtney, Louise etc are not legacy characters as they are unlikely to return. Just because Stacey is going to be pregnant with Martin as the father doesn't mean that any child they have is any more important to the future of the show than any other character that may be created for the show. It all depends on if the public warm to a specific character and how successful they are when they are introduced. |

The fact that Louise and Courtney, and, indeed, Richard (Branning) Mitchell, are out there is legacy enough. Courtney is now 18 and an adult. She can walk back into Walford anytime she wants. All she, and whatever EP is in charge, need is a valid excuse for her showing up without Grant huffing and puffing too far behind. I'm sure at some point, we'll see Courtney. Louise has been mentioned. She's 13 years old and with her mother. If Lucy Taggart were to agree to a return, then Louise would come with her, unless we get another storyline about Lisa going off the rails and Louise returning. Still, the fact that she's around means that one day, when she's able, she may seek out her father again. We're far more likely to see these characters than the contingency-planned Mark Whoever, raised in the Sunshine State of Florida, but who'd be played by a pasty-faced Brit with a bad accent. As Holly pointed out, Matthew Cotton-Mitchell is another generational extension of an important family as is Dottie/Kirsty, who's also out there. |

It's a shame that, because of varying circumstances, Liam's parents left the show. When Ricky and Bianca were brought back and re-married, I thought we were onto this generation's version of Arthur and Pauline with them. Liam's an important legacy character in that he links the Beales, Brannings and Butchers, but it's unfortunate that he's played by one of the weakest actors on the programme. My guess is that in five years' time or so, he may return, re-cast, with a new head and played by a better actor. It isn't as if he's without relatives on the Square, having two uncles in Ian and Max remaining. Whilst we're on the subject, Rebecca Fowler is just as an important legacy character as the upcoming Fowler/Slater baby. Rebecca links the Fowlers to the Brannings. I'd actually like to see the Martin-Stacey family unit consisting of them, Lily, Rebecca and the baby, with Sonia far, far away and never heard from again. |

Eh? Sorry, but who, exactly? Yes, Frank had a "thing" for Peggy and married her, but he cheated on her with Pat and was planning to elope with Pat. Ricky married Sam, but she treated him like shit, not once but twice, the last time willing to con him into leaving Bianca because she was pregnant with a child who wasn't even his. |

Things didn't work out but that doesn't change the fact that at some point in their lives both Ricky and Frank had more than a bit of a thing for a Mitchell girl seeing as they both ended up marrying one. So it didn't work out, odds are Liam and Courtney wouldn't work out either but the very act of them getting together would definitely continue the tradition of Butcher men and Mitchell women having a thing for eachother. |

Even though he's hardly even seen and is a brat Dennis Rickman Jr ?(I hate the name Denny) will always be my favourite legacy baby as he the grandson of Den Watts and his parents Sharon and Dennis Rickman are my favourite characters (and couple) of all time. He is an important link back to the history of the show. Although I would say Vicki Fowler is the most important legacy Baby. As she's a connection between the shows first families- The Fowlers and The Watts. She's also the only surviving biological child of Den Watts. Sister of Sharon Watts, Dennis Rickman and Mark Fowler Jr who is the son of Grant Mitchell! With Arthur and Pauline as grandparents. Martin and Mark as Uncles. Ian, Peter Lucy, Bobby and Rebecca as Cousins and of course biological AND adoptive Auntie to Dennis Rickman Jr. (Lucky Girl!) Edited by Christina, 29 Jun 2015, 16:40.

I'm afraid I simply don't care about so-called "legacy babies". It matters not one jot to me, that this character is related to that EE original. All I require are believable, engaging characters. Lucy Beale is a case in point. That she was Lou's great-granddaughter didn't change the fact that she was shallow, unlikeable, self-centred, boring and a waste of space (in my opinion, of course). She didn't suddenly become interesting because she was related to one of EE's most iconic characters. So I'm afraid I'm completely missing the point of why it's so important that some of the upcoming newborns are joining together EE's most important families. If we must have so many pregnancies and babies, I hope the writing makes it worthwhile and that TPTB aren't simply depending on blood links to make these new storylines interesting. |

Lucy was a good character that had bundles of potential but was shamelessly wasted, ask yourself why have they killed of Lucy and wasted Lola easy answer two consecutive producers obsession with the Brannings girls(who are grossly overrated in my opinion) .

No one's saying legacy characters are essentially interesting and dynamic. Is Liam Butcher a show-stopper? No. What's important is that there is continuity, concerning particular families in this soap and others. Since 2006, the Fowlers were extinct on the programme. Now we have the return of Martin, the integration of Stacey Slater, arguably the most interesting of all the Millennial characters, into the Fowler dynamic, and you have, with Stacey's child, Martin's daughter and their own child, a re-establishment of an important original EastEnders' family. Lucy wasn't a particularly likeable character, although she was an important one in being part of the next generation of Beales. Neither was Janine, in relationship to the Butchers; but having watched both these girls grow up, we understood how family circumstances made them the way they were. Janine is sorely missed, and in her own right, so is Lucy. I believe that the actress was axed owing to the fact that she was the weakest in a trio of ingenues (McGarty, Jossa), but I feel that DTC took a big risk in killing her off, considering the dearth of legacy characters at the moment. |

Legacy characters are all well and good, but how many times can they be re-cast down the line? Peter is barely into his 20s and if he's to return, he'll need to be re-cast. It's good to have a legacy, but not to the point of having so many actors playing the character. |

SEVEN actors portrayed Peter Barlow on Corrie before Chris Gascoigne was cast. Very rarely do you get anyone staying from childhood to adulthood in a role. People like Natalie Cassidy and Letitia Dean are exceptions. I don't think we should see Peter for about five years when an adult actor is cast who's willing to stay more than a couple of years. Legacy characters who start out as children are regularly re-cast for various reasons. Already we're on a re-cast of Amy, and she's only 7 years old. Re-casts are the least important aspect of a legacy character; it's just important that the continuity of knowing the character is out and about that's important. Do you think the same actresses who played Courtney and Louise Mitchell are going to play them now as an adolescent or a young adult? I don't think so. |

Characters shouldn't be brought back just because of what family they belong to. |

As many times as need be. Recasts may be weird for a bit but after that you just get back to following the story. It's really not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. |

What would be left of the show in the long run if they didn't? Nothing. Long running soaps follow the continuing story of the same families/street/community over many decades. It matters who people are related to because that's the fabric of the show. The fact that you can trace characters back through the generations, having seen exactly how their parents and grandparents, grew up, lived and died is the the one thing that ties everything together. Families will come and go over the decades but at the end of the day the show very much a generational saga. |

It just seems this whole thread is on the basis that some characters are more important than others. Each character should be judged on their own merit
