The Travels of Kathy; A Fleeting Visit to Florida?

It's been mentioned in various places that Kathy actually visited Angie in Florida sometime in tbe 1990s. I can honestly say I cannot remember this occurring.

FWIW, Sharon visited her mother at the very beginning of her romantic association with Grant, and she then fled there in the wake of Sharongate. At that time, Sharon was the pariah of the Square, and Kathy was viewed as a victim. When Sharon returned to try to wreak revenge on Grant, Angie had written a letter to Pauline, blessing her out for having hung Sharon out to dry whilst emotionally supporting Kathy, a woman who'd effectively shat upon Pauline's beloved brother from a great height,

So ... if Kathy visited Angie anytime after that, she'd have got short shrift. Kathy left the Square with Ben to go directly to South Africa to live with Ted. She returned to the Square for Ian's millennial wedding. After that, the next reference we got to her was her impending wedding to Gavin, by which time Angie would have been very ill from the repercussions of her alcoholism.

I'd like to have a reference to this visit to Florida, because I can't remember anyone on the programme referencing this visit.

Not a clue, before my time, but can I ask whilst were somewhat on the subject - did Kathy have prior knowledge of Sharon and Phil's affair before the night in the Vic with Grant and the tape? I've seen that clip hundreds of times and Kathy just genuinely doesn't look like someone who's just found out her fiance had been playing away with his sister in-law.

If she did already know, why did she act so aggrieved afterwards? She's perfectly friendly to Sharon at the start of the clip.

No one knew about Sharon's and Phil's affair but those two, and at the time of their affair, Sharon was very much married to Grant, and Phil was not involved in any relationship with anyone. So the bulk of Sharongate was before Phil and Kathy were an item.

Sharon backed out of running away with Phil and elected to stay with Grant. Phil, on the rebound, married Nadia the Romanian girl, in order to enable her to stay in England. In fact, when Phil did begin to get romantically involved with Kathy, he was still very much married to Nadia.

What rankled Grant about Sharongate was the fact that his wife had an affair with his brother; what rankled Kathy was that the moment Sharon found out Phil and Kathy were going to get engaged, she rushed around to see him, they kissed passionately (like Kush and Stacey) but then backed off without anything further happening (again, like Kush and Stacey). That's what pissed Kathy off, but Sharongate happened when she and Phil weren't even contemplating an involvement.

Thanks - I think I've just got so used to cliched soap affair storylines that last about six months, I always forget Sharongate played out over a number of years. I think in my head Kathy and Phil were together a lot longer than they actually were as well and Nadia the refugee always slips my mind.

Hi all.

Kathy did know about Sharon and Phil before the Sharongate reveal in the Vic. Kathy found out during a Paris trip in 1993 or 1994, where Phil and Kathy got together. Sharon, Grant, Pat and Frank were also there. Frank and Pat went to visit Diane. At the climax of the week, Kathy and Phil are kissing on the ferry trip home, Sharon looks on all hurt and Kathy is very much aware of why and is a bit awks about it. Phil had confessed to her. So she knew, but Mrs Peel is right in that Kathy's anger towards Sharon was the betrayal of the kiss that happened subsequently, which Sharon talk about on the tape.

I have no memory of Kathy going to US. She did go on a trip in the 90s if i remember rightly. With Tricky Dicky or something.

Interestingly, Kathy was also the only one mentioned to go visit Sue Osman in hospital after she was sectioned. and if I recall correctly, I think she was still doing so by the time Eddie Royle was on the show. I remember a conversation when Eddie was praising her for being such a good samaritan.

I remember watching that episode vividly - 2nd September 1993. It was one of the few times we heard the jazzy theme tune rendition of Julia's Theme at the end when Sharon glanced at Phil and Kathy kissing.

Ah - those were the days. I do miss EastEnders' trips abroad / weeks away from the Square. Not much chance of seeing these any more if the Conservative government get their way, though.

A good question. I don't have the answer myself. It couldn't have been as long ago as the France episodes in 2005, can it? The ones with Mickey Miller going to see Dawn...? Were there more recent episodes set abroad??

I was also thinking that it was when Mickey went to visit Dawn but it does seem like a really long time ago...

I guess the one when Peggy was in "Spain" in September doesn't count :P .

I think the Normandy episode in November 2005 with Nana and Alfie was the last one filmed abroad. There was Peggy's cameo last year which was supposedly in Portugal but looked suspiciously like Hertfordshire.

Were the Mickey and Dawn scenes actually filmed abroad or was it just Hertfordshire "dressed" as France?

That's right. Sharon told Michelle when that infamous tape was rolling. I'd forgotten about the French trip - my main memory of that was Frank speaking fractured French and spontaneously combusting when he found that Diane got pregnant by a German lad (A GERMAN!?).

I'm fairly certain Kathy never visited Angie in the 1990's. I can't imagine Angie would have welcomed Kathy to hers and Sharon's home after she turned the whole square against her.

There were a couple of occasions during the 90s - one was a romantic break of a few days with Tricky Dicky and one when she went to stay with her brother which covered Gillian Taylforth's maternity leave; but she didn't visit Angie.

Angie was rarely mentioned during this period and only in the event that Sharon needed to visit her - at the beginning of her romance with Grant and at the break-up of her marriage. After Sharongate and the letter Angie wrote Pauline remonstrating with her for not defending the Square's shunning of Sharon and siding with Kathy, Kathy wouldn't have been welcome to visit. By the time Kathy and Gavin got together, Angie was very ill.

Kathy never visited Sharon, and Ben wasn't in the car where Kathy and Gavin purportedly died.
