The fact that Kathy and Ian's reunion isn't at night makes me want to cry.

I do have to agree with that. It belongs in the dark. The dead of night. I'm a bit gutted about that.
"I loved it in the Olden Days because you talked more. There’s more action now. You know, we would do scenes in the Rovers of me, Bet and Doris Speed with a cup of coffee each before we opened the pub, talking about absolute rubbish. But it was something, and it was what people do." - Betty Driver

Those last pictures are hilarious. This is pure farce, a far cry from the first post of the thread...

Do we know those shots are definitely the first time Ian sets eyes on Kathy again? I assume so, given the shock on his face but it does seem a tad farcical. Let's see how it plays out. I think I would have preferred the reunion back on the Square.

Surprised this has been leaked, given how good DTC has been at keeping things secret and that this is a much anticipated moment, not only in terms of 2015 on EastEnders, but EastEnders generally.

It really belongs on the Square. I always had the image of Ian stumbling back through his front room as Kathy stood there, pleading for him to listen to her.

If this is it it just feels rather, bleh.

Yeah, should've been at night.

I still hope we get a two-hander between Ian and Kathy.

I actually though the reunion would play like this,In the Sarah Phelps episode when Ian moved Lou's/Pauline's armchair and saw Sharon's blond hair at night and thought it was Lucy,I thought that Kathy would knock while Ian sitting on the chair and he expects Sharon or Jane and sees his mum..

Well I think it looks brilliant. Big location stuff like this always tends to be good. I have to say that I'm a little shocked and disappointed that you're all writing it off so easily based only on two pictures? We don't know where or how this fits into the overall story.

Little bit disappointed that this will be how Kathy and Ian reunite - I agree that it should've been a night setting. I'm holding out hope that we'll still get an episode of them back at the Beale house though.

I'm not surprised that we're seeing Ian on the verge of a breakdown again. The signs have been there since the Lucy stuff kicked into gear again and now we've got Kathy in the mix, bringing with her the man who is almost certainly Sharon's biological father. And then he's got to find out that Phil's known about this for several months beforehand.

Don't really care if it's night or not. It's the characters that matter at the end of the day.

We've all had our ideas of how it should go down but to be honest I think this suits Kathy just fine. In fact I don't think a dramatic return in the middle of the night would suit her. It's just not who Kathy is. She's an ordinary woman not some larger than life character like Dirty Den or Nasty Nick. Besides technically she's already had the middle of the night return.

I think its over dramatic its just after he attempts to commits suicide. Instead of exploring the depth aftermath of such a place that took him too we get a over the top Kathy running out Dallas style afterwards. I find that a farce too. If they have to go down this unrealistic story I would much prefer for it to be atmospheric instead of it robbing time from such a big thing such as attempted suicide. I think its a shame to take away from that so "Surprise! Mummy is alive" bit tacky too.

Your approval is neither desired nor required.

Julia Smith "We decided to go for a realistic, fairly outspoken type of drama which could encompass stories about homosexuality, rape, unemployment, racial prejudice, etc., in a believable context. Above all, we wanted realism".

Yeah I was definitely hoping for a raw, emotional reunion at night in the place where Ian has lived all his life. I presume the actual "heart-to-heart" will take place back at the Square but this doesn't quite feel as real as it should. Given how sensational a woman returning from the dead is, that initial reunion has to be raw and from the heart for it to work. I think Den and Sharon's reunion was the best thing about his second stint.

Mummy Kathy to the rescue! While she's up there talking Ian down, can she do us all a favour and push Jane over the edge please?! Thanks!

Darkness, light ... Maybe there's a symbolism here beyond the obvious. Den returned at night. In the episode of his return, the first thing we saw was a fox running across the Square, an animal always associated with Den. And the returned Den was darker than before.

There's no doubt Ian's been going through a pretty dark period for a long time, and it's believable that such things could drive a person like Ian to contemplate killing himself. Kathy, choosing to make her presence known to him at such a low time in his life, during the light of day, just might symbolise that she's bringing light and hope back to him. I don't find the picture of her running to help him in any way contrived or corny, and I'm more interested in hearing what happened to her during the past decade. We know what drove Ian to such circumstances; we now need to know how he's going to resolve the situation.

So the moment we've been waiting all year for is nearly upon us in about 6-7 weeks (mid-late September)-i still think there needs to be a two hander between Kathy and Ian where that episode is set at night, regardless of whether the reunion moment is set at night or not.

Ian's been deeply conflicted since learning about what happened to Lucy. Although from time to time, we've seen him attempting to have a normal existence, there's always something that happens which slams the guilt right back in his face. It wasn't long ago, Ian had a breakdown. I'm surprised he's managed to live in the same house with Bobby and Jane, much less go about his normal business pfaffing about daily on the spot where his daughter died.

I said awhile ago and again recently, that Ian would be driven to contemplate suicide, to get to his lowest point, and then have Kathy appear, offering him the sort of unconditional loving comfort and support that he needs. Nothing tacky about that. You need to recall that Sharon finished a bed romp with her adopted brother only to mosy on down the what was then Angie's Den to find that Den was alive.

This is only part of the drama to ensue. Kathy has to re-connect with Ben yet, and Sharon has to meet her birth father. If you're wanting an atmospheric, dark background, you can bet that Gavin's identity will be made known to Sharon at night.
