I'm just interested to know how people would have liked Kathy's return from the dead to be handled, and whether or not the the current team's insurance scam explanation is the one that most people would have gone for. Over the years, I've seen two main methods touted about of bringing Kathy back from the dead. The first, witness protection, is one that would need a lot of explanation. Why, for example, if Kathy was placed in witness protection would Ben not be kept with his mother? Also, if Gavin and Kathy were seriously in that much danger that the South African authorities would need to place them in witness protection would Ian and Ben also not be in danger back in Walford? After all they were only a few hours away by plane, and surely someone THAT dangerous could easily have gone after them. I wasn't behind Kathy's return at the start, mainly because I thought witness protection would have caused some many plotholes. The other method I've seen touted around is the one that the show have gone for - Kathy and Gavin faking their own deaths deliberately for the insurance, and this is my personal preferred method. I've seen 'Kathy was a salt of the earth character - she would never lie to her sons' being banded around again and again, but if Gavin forced her I can't see why this isn't a plausible explanation. So, which option would you have preferred? Witness protection, insurance scam or something entirely different? As a side note, this isn't a thread for 'I wish she didn't etc.' It's happening, she's coming back and I'd like to know how people would have liked to see it pan out. |

I think the insurance scam story is the best and most plausible way of explaining Kathy and Gavin faking their deaths as it has actually occurred in real-life with the case of John Darwin 'the canoe man'. A faked death isn't that implausible of a story, it's how it will be told from a character viewpoint that sells it. We as the audience don't know the full nature of Gavin and Kathy's relationship yet to understand how and why Kathy went along with the scam but the hints are that it is an abusive relationship which has evolved over 14 years so Kathy would be very removed from who she was back in 2000. |
