Are Gavin and Kathy Grifters; Are They Scamming Phil?

We've seen a lot of twists in a lot of storylines on the programme recently, and just remembering the latest Gavin twist in the Kathy storyline got me wondering - and I appreciate that I'm probably miles off and in for a torrent of abuse - but I can't help thinking that this is one helluva big scam by them on Phil, or more specifically, Bank of Phil.

I can't help thinking that this is all an elaborate ruse.

First of all, there's Kathy's incongruent behaviour. She spent the majority of the time, in her scenes with Sharon on Tuesday, rather ramblingly, explaining how she was manipulated and manoeuvred into going along with Gavin's insurance scam, not even knowing about it until the very last minute as she left home with Gavin and Ben remained with "one of Gavin's sisters." She also apologised to Sharon for her behaviour the day before and assured Sharon that she had no interest in Phil.

I believe her. I think she's sincere. Let me be clear ... I believed her up to that point and I still do.

Then she blurted out that she'd got in touch with Phil in the wake of Ben being imprisoned for killing Heather, and Sharon stormed off in a huff - this was the day after Kathy had lied to Sharon telling her that she'd only made her existence known to Phil a couple of weeks previously.

Then, there was her scene on Thursday, where she blatantly came onto him, caressing his cheek and seductively asking if Sharon loved him "the way I loved you." That totally didn't seem like Kathy at all, even during the years when she and Phil were together, or rather, when they were happy together before the rot set in. Add to that, last night's phone call, which she made in a weird, whiney, almost sing-songy voice, going on about there being so many things she had to say to him.

Then, of course, came the knock on the door, Kathy's sudden look of panic, and later the emergence of Gavin from the bathroom after Phil had gone, complimenting her on her performance.

That's what got me thinking that this entire situation is a set-up, a scam.

Think about it: Gavin always finds Kathy. He told Phil that she "leaves a trail," but if Phil Mitchell were rescuing him from control-freak Gavin, surely Phil is savvy enough to make certain Kathy can't be found. Yet Gavin found her. That means Gavin is either smarter than Phil or Phil's losing his touch (or both) ... or maybe Kathy called Gavin.

When Phil and the psychopath went in rescue of Ronnie, I thought Gavin's relinquishing her to them rather too lame, so I expected something, later, in retaliation. Revenge is a dish that's best eaten cold an all that, but I'm wondering now if Kathy made contact with him. Another thing that's niggling, and this has to do with the storyline, is the circular aspect of this, its repetitiveness, which is something the show cannot seem to shed and something, I think, Alex Lamb seems to enjoy - and that is the repetition of a scene or meme over and over.

Months ago, in her second apperance, Phil met Kathy in a cafe, handed over a huge sum of money in an envelope, and told her he was finished with this game, that no more money was forthcoming, that she was on her own. Yet she pops up again, waiting for him at the train station, and there goes Phil with a bagful of cash, which he's unable to give her. Finally, as he drove her away from Walford in his SUV, he handed her more cash, telling her there was enough for her there to get a small start and start over, but he qualified this with the addendum that she move away from Walford.

Yet there she is, holed up in a small hotel nearby, near enough that Sharon can bring her even more money, in Friday's episode, Phil calls it quits again, telling her she could keep the money, just leave him alone.

I'm wondering if this has been a huge scam, masterminded by Gavin, for the money. In fact, I'm wondering if Gavin and Kathy are really a couple of con artists, who've eked out an existence like this over the years. I'm not saying Kathy is a prominent part of this; I'm not even saying she'd approve of this lifestyle, but she married Gavin and she must have known, or discovered, just how much of a wide boy he is. The insurance fraud the perpetrated is just another type of con, and it's been intimated that he did this as a result of the debts he owed to certain people. As much as it sounded like they may have been fleeing, to hear Kathy talk about assorted hotel rooms etc, maybe they were moving on from scam to scam.

I do, honestly, believe Kathy contacted Phil in earnest after learning about Ben's fate. I don't think there was anything untoward about this, it was just a mother worried about what had happened to her son; but I do think Gavin is the driving force behind using this for his own ends, as a way of capitalising on a situation. And I do think that Kathy is tired of that sort of life, uneasy at scamming people who've meant a lot to her in the past, and homesick for her family in all of this, so I do think she genuinely wants back in Walford. Maybe Gavin's promised to let her go after this final scam, but something is skewed here.

The fact that Kathy admitted to Phil that she wanted to hand herself into the police, admit insurance fraud, actually take the blame for that, herself, and let Gavin have the funds to establish a new identity and leave the country, made me wonder why she'd even want to protect him, if he were such a monster. Then, there was the kiss goodbye at the airfield and the cryptic little smile between the two of them.

I know at the beginning of this whole episode, when Taylforth returned, that both she and DTC had said that all was not what it seemed, so I'm wondering if this is all a con and if Kathy's an unwilling participant, but a participant all the same.
